Heisman Trophy Finalists 2022: College Football Candidates For The Trophy

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, TCU quarterback Max Duggan, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and USC quarterback Caleb Williams were named finalists for the 88th annual Heisman Memorial Trophy on Monday night (Dec. 5), live on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown.

The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner will be announced during the televised Heisman Trophy Ceremony Presented by Nissan that will air Saturday (Dec. 10) at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Bennett, a senior quarterback, has rushed for another 184 yards and seven scores while completing 269 of 395 passes (68.1%) for 3,425 yards and 20 touchdowns with just six interceptions. Georgia finished the regular season undefeated (13-0), winning the SEC championship and the top seed in the 2022 College Football Playoff. Bennett, who guided the Bulldogs to the 2021 national championship and has steered them to 15 straight victories, threw for more than 300 yards four times this year and at least 70% of his passes were successfully completed in five different games. He 8.7 yards per attempt rank him 14th best nationally, while his 68.1 completion % is placed 13th.

Senior quarterback Duggan of TCU completed 239 of 368 passes (64.9%) for 3,321 yards and 30 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He has started 41 games in his career. He helped the Horned Frogs to a 12-1 record and their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff by rushing for an additional 404 yards and an additional six touchdowns. In terms of yards per attempt (9.0), quarterback rating (165.48), points contributed (2018), and touchdown passes, Duggan is tied for sixth nationwide (30). His 30 touchdown throws rank third all-time at his school. Duggan had five passes for more than 300 yards and seven games with three or more touchdown passes. He ran for over 100 yards twice in a game, including for 116 yards and two scores against Oklahoma and for 110 yards and a touchdown in the Big 12 championship game against Kansas State.

Stroud, a redshirt sophomore quarterback and second-year starter, led the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record and a position in the College Football Playoff by completing 235 of 355 passes for 3,340 yards (66.2%) with 37 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He ranks first in the US for yards per play (8.75) and quarterback rating (176.25), is tied for first with 37 touchdown passes, and ranks third for attempts (9.4). Stroud leads the Buckeye attack, which is second nationally in scoring (44.5). In five different games, he completed passes for over 300 yards and five or more touchdowns, including a season-high six at Michigan State. In the Big Ten, he is the first quarterback to have consecutive 30-touchdown seasons.

After transferring from Oklahoma, Willams is a sophomore quarterback and a first-year starter for USC. He has passed for 4,075 yards on 296 of 448 attempts (66.1%), with a national co-leading 37 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. He ranks fourth nationwide in passing yards, fifth in quarterback rating (167.94), and sixth in passing yards per game (313.5). Williams is third nationally in total offence with 4,447 yards, breaking USC’s previous record. Williams guided USC to an 11-2 season after the Trojans had a 4-8 campaign in 2021. (4,225, 2017). Additionally, on 109 carries, he rushed for 372 yards with a team-high 10 touchdowns, the most at USC in at least 70 years. Williams’ 47 total touchdowns lead the country, as do his 282 points responsible for his total touchdowns are a school record. He threw for over 300 yards seven times, including twice over 400 yards.
