‘Happens Every So Often in a Decade’- UFC Featherweight Ace Max Holloway Weighs In On the Impact of His UFC 276 Trilogy Fight Against Alexander Volkanovski
UFC featherweight Max Holloway knows the stakes on his match-up against Alexander Volkanovski which is fast approaching at UFC 276. Holloway is down 0-2 heading into the trilogy bout, making him the first UFC fighter in that position to fight for a belt.
Fans of the sport are excited to see this clash between two of the all-time great pound-for-pound fighters who have turned in spectacular performances. Despite the fact that Alexander ‘The Great’ has secured wins in both the outings thus far, the intrigue for the match-up is palpable all across the MMA world.
Max Holloway spoke to MMA Fighting and talked about his upcoming bout. He lamented on the fact that a fight of such epic proportions comes along very rarely in the sport of MMA. He mentioned the competitive rivalry that Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones shared as a possible comparison for the epic fight that is about to go down at UFC 276.
“If you look at it this way, it’s crazy. When in the last decade did this fight happen, where two top guys in the top 10 pound-for-pound rankings happen?” Holloway said Monday on The MMA Hour “How many times did it happen? The only guys that come to mind is ‘DC’ and [Jon] Jones.”
“That’s the only guys. And we’re here now, and this fight, these things don’t happen. And these are the things that excite me. We get to be a part of that history. And to you guys, to all the hardcore fans, this is what they want.”
“They want the best of the best fighting each other — and they are. These top pound-for-pound fighters don’t fighters don’t fight each other. They just don’t. It doesn’t happen. It happens every so often in a decade, and we’re getting blessed with one right now.” [h/t mmafighting.com]
