Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis Calls Out Ex-NFL Star In “Best Cornerback” Beef On Twitter

Who is the NFL’s top young cornerback? Most people would cite current Defensive Rookie of the Year Sauce Gardner. But not longstanding cover star Asante Samuel, who on Tuesday said that the Jets’ large market viewership was inflating Gardner’s worth. This prompted another Hall of Famer in the NFL, Darrelle Revis, to defend Gardner.

When Gardner was ranked the NFL’s second-best corner heading into 2023, Samuel tweeted that “the New York media will take your career to another level.” Samuel had shared the findings of an ESPN survey of players, coaches, and executives.

“For the record, (Seahawks CB) Tariq (Woolen) had a better rookie season,” he said. They both performed admirably, but what the heck are you guys watching? Ya’ll  are highly influenced by the media, not facts.”

Asante Samuel attempted to disparage Darrelle Revis during a discussion with New York Jets star Sauce Gardner, and Darrelle Revis could not watch idly.

The complete exchange between Samuel and Gardner can be read at CBS Sports, but when Samuel also made an attempt to minimize Revis’ brilliance, the former Jets lockdown cornerback was forced to answer.

“Quit being a hater when it comes to rising stars at the cornerback position,” Revis wrote. “Be mad at the voters who never considered you ‘shutdown.’ … (I) never was inspired to watch (your) film, but something does jog my memory. I do remember we played (the) Falcons and (head coach) Rex Ryan made a highlight clip of (you) being double-moved on almost every single route. I recall Rex saying to receivers in our weekly team meetings … ‘If he lines up across from you, double-move him every time.’

“So in practice our receivers referred to him as the “DOUBLE MOVE KING.” I never viewed him more than what was said about him in the scouting report.”

Of course, Samuel has a good motive to support interceptions. With 51 interceptions over the course of his career, the former Patriots and Eagles standout, who competed from 2003 to 2013, is still barely outside the top 30 ballhawks in NFL history. However, this does not imply that Gardner agreed with the all-timer’s criticisms.

Samuel didn’t appear overly concerned by the criticism, tweeting later that he and fellow cornerback Deion Sanders “set the standards” for the position and that Gardner and Revis’ comments were merely “disrespectful.”
