Hall Of Fame J.J. Watt Lashes Out At The Press For Criticising Rookie Will Levis After His First Day At OTA

The Tennessee Titans recently made headlines after it was revealed that rookie quarterback Will Levis had a difficult first day. It caused considerable worry among the fan base. JJ Watt, a future Hall of Famer, was also drawn to it.

Since his exclusion from the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft in April, when cameras closely documented his wait in the green room throughout the event, Levis has faced a lot of additional scrutiny.

In late May, a day after Levis’ Titans difficulties became a hot topic in the country, J.J. Watt spoke out against the unjust scrutiny rookies endure, even during OTAs.

“‘Rookie has rough practice in his first week of OTAs.’ Yeah, that’s called being a rookie. It’s called first week of OTAs,” Watt said Thursday in a video posted on Twitter.

“I had rough practices every single year in my 12 years. I’ve had rough games. I’ve had multiple rough games. S–t’s hard. It’s the National Football League.”

Although Watt did not mention Levis by name, the timing of the post would indicate that it was the cause of his annoyance.

“I know I have more opportunities tomorrow and the next day, so I’m not going to beat myself up,” Levis said afterward, according to ESPN.com.

“High standards is the name of the game. It’s not to beat yourself up. It’s to motivate you to go out there and perform to the best of your ability.”

After 12 NFL seasons, Watt, 34, announced his retirement in December. He is reportedly looking for work in television broadcasting now.

“I understand, this is a business. We’re paid millions of dollars, and you expect greatness right out of the gate out of every single guy, and you’re going to say, ‘Suck it up and deal with it.’ But let’s let guys develop,” Watt said Thursday.

Well, Watt is correct. Putting this immense pressure on the rookie and judge him by first OTA practice is not fair! This leads to further demoralisation! It’s business but it has to be fair!
