Gregg Doyel of IndyStar apologizes for odd remarks made about Caitlin Clark
The first overall choice in Monday’s WNBA Draft, Caitlin Clark, was formally presented to the local media by the Indiana Fever on Wednesday. Together with her, Christie Sides, the head coach of the Fever, fielded questions from the media.
When IndyStar reporter Gregg Doyel chose to approach the two women, it was the most memorable moment—and not in a good way. Speaking with women does not seem to be something Mr. Doyel does frequently, based on what he said.
Reporter: 🫶
Caitlin Clark: "You like that?"
Reporter: "I like that you're here."
Caitlin: "Yeah, I do that at my family after every game.”
Reporter: "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine."
Caitlin: 😳

As OutKick reported earlier on Wednesday, it began with an odd exchange with Clark. It was not apparent to us at the time that Doyel had experienced two unusual interactions that same day.
There was a conversation with Clark initially.
Gregg Doyle had second exchange that would also be categorized as…creepy.

When it was the head coach’s turn to speak, Doyel made the decision to try again after one awful exchange.
Doyel asked Sides about her new player, Clark for example.
Whoa. What is the matter with this man?
Column coming. https://t.co/tamTGHuS5t

It should come as no surprise that he decided to apologize right away. Oh, and he also said he will write a column discussing the entire situation. I am eager to read that.
“Today in my uniquely oafish way, while welcoming @CaitlinClark22 to Indy, I formed my hands into her signature [heart emoji],” Doyel used to post on X, which was Twitter.
“My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better.”

The hilarious part is that he included Clark in his apologies. Clark has liked and re-posted additional things on X after his apology, but as of this writing, she has not responded to him.
I admit that I admire the hustle. Doyel is using the unusual (though unfavorable) attention he is receiving to release a column that is likely going to be the most-read piece he has ever written in his more than two decades of writing.

I’m not sure what more can be said. He apologized for acting quite creepy with a young woman, but now he’s being hauled along. And he’s getting DRAGGED, I promise.
