Governor Announces Bills-Steelers Wild Card Weekend Playoff Game Will Take Place Despit Weather Conditions

The United States’ deep winter is gradually loosening its hold. However, January is still here, and the NFL playoffs are still being affected by cold weather.

Governor Announces Bills-Steelers Wild Card Weekend Playoff Game Will Take Place Despite Weather Conditions

As the Buffalo Bills get ready to meet the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round on Sunday, lake-effect snow threatens to cause havoc once more. The Houston Texans are anticipated to play the Ravens on Saturday in the midst of a brutal cold snap.

Before Sunday’s game, Buffalo is under another lake-effect snow warning. Although it isn’t expected to have an effect on the game itself, it might cause issues for the Bills as they get ready for the Chiefs during an already compressed week.

Buffalo’s weather-related delays notwithstanding, New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared on Sunday that the Bills-Steelers Super Wild Card Weekend playoff game will take place on Monday at 4:30 p.m. and “will not be pushed back again.” Due to bad weather, the game that was initially set for Sunday at 1 p.m. was moved to Monday.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be pleasant, but it’s not going to be life-threatening either,” Hochul said, via CBS Sports Lead NFL Reporter Tracy Wolfson.

Citing concerns about public safety, Hochul had declared on Saturday that the game would be postponed from its scheduled beginning time of Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

A winter storm pounded Western New York on Sunday, depositing around 17 inches of snow and causing blizzard conditions and wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour in Orchard Park, home of the Bills’ Highmark Stadium.

Following the National Weather Service’s (NWS) prediction that “travel will become difficult to impossible,” Hochul issued travel advisories to shield citizens from the blizzard conditions.

Amidst persistent weather problems in Buffalo, there were rumors that the game would be rescheduled for Tuesday.

Who wins this game will ultimately depend on how each team responds to the weather. The Steelers defeated the Raiders 13–10 on December 24, 2022, in their most recent encounter under circumstances like to those they will see on Sunday. On a night when the game temperature was 9 degrees and the wind was blowing 21 miles per hour, Pittsburgh won.

In addition, the team has relied on unpaid snow shovelers to assist in cleaning Highmark Stadium’s field and stands while staff cleared parking lots. The travel prohibition for the area was only removed on Sunday night for people who volunteered to shovel the stadium.

In order to assist get the stadium ready for the game, the team was still in need of shovelers on Monday morning after volunteers toiled through the night.

There won’t be many parking spots available for the Bills-Steelers game due to wind gusts and drifting snow, so the snow will need to be moved. To help spectators, the Bills are providing free shuttle bus services.
