Giannis Antetokounmpo: The Abu Dhabi Crowd Chanted His Name
Although the Milwaukee Bucks lost both of their recent games against the Atlanta Hawks in Abu Dhabi, it comes as no surprise that the crowd adores Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Greek Freak had a successful Saturday, but the former MVP was the player the crowd chanted about for most of the game. The audience cheered as Antetokounmpo responded even more strongly and pretended to play for time.
On Thursday, when the NBA played its first-ever game in the Gulf, the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, the loudest, almost deafening cheer was not for a dunk or a fantastic point play but for the debut of Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Giannis Antetokounmpo: NBA’s Finest & His Popularity
Giannis could only play 21 minutes in his first game of the year for a Bucks squad that was expected to contend for the championship due to obvious rust. But he did exhibit some of the qualities that have made him one of the NBA’s finest.

The 27-year-old led the Bucks in scoring with 19 points as they faced the Atlanta Hawks in a rematch of the Eastern Conference finals from 2021. He had two assists and seven rebounds, but his team was defeated 113–123.
"I think he's very much I feel as a global citizen… He truly is someone who can represent many different cultures, at the same time, I think he brings true joy to the game… He's a commissioner's dream."

After a three-year pandemic-induced hiatus, the NBA has returned to the world for the first time. Their drive to expand the game in Asia is clear, as evidenced by the Golden State Warriors and Washington Wizards’ trips to Japan earlier this month.

Why he receives so much love and admiration is very clear!
There are incredibly few ways for a basketball player to influence a crowd without ever touching the ball, but on Thursday in Abu Dhabi, the crowd’s attention was magnetically pulled to the Bucks forward, with every move they made on and off the floor being loudly applauded.
“I believe that the best in the world is Steph Curry.”

It’s challenging to pinpoint a single factor in Giannis’ widespread appeal. The first thing is his motivational past. Giannis does not have an AAU or NCAA history, in contrast to the majority of NBA players who are early selection picks. His ability to achieve the perfect balance between domination and likeability, between his generational brilliance and his charm and humility, between his merciless dominance and his love of the game, is what makes him so endearing.

Giannis is a two-time NBA MVP thanks to his fluid play and flexibility; the second time he won the award was in 2021 when he helped the Bucks win their first championship in more than 50 years. He is on one of the most significant contracts in NBA history, earning upwards of $220 million over five years.
