Georgia’s Will Muschamp Throws Shade At Ohio State’s Alum Kirk Herbstreit Before College Football Playoff

The argument between ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit and Georgia assistant coach Will Muschamp is certain to be the funniest “controversy” of the week. As the College Football Playoff match between Georgia and Ohio State was being hyped in the media, Muschamp reflected about his playing days with the Bulldogs and a specific matchup with the Buckeyes.

Nothing beats a good old fashioned shadefest before a big game.

Will Muschamp, Georgia’s co-defensive coordinator, thought back on the 1993 encounter between the two teams when he was a safety for the Bulldogs in anticipation of Saturday’s College Football Playoff Semifinal between Ohio State and Georgia. Muschamp made light of the fact that the Buckeyes’ then-quarterback Kirk Herbstreit’s pregame toss helped him predict the Bulldogs’ victory on Tuesday.

Muschamp played safety for Georgia in their lone encounter, and Kirk Herbstreit started at quarterback for Ohio State. In the Florida Citrus Bowl, they clashed.

On January 1, 1993, the Bulldogs won; this weekend’s game will be almost exactly 30 years later.

Looking back, Muschamp poked fun at Kirk Herbstreit by saying he should have known the Bulldogs would win that game.

Herbstreit channelled his inner Don Draper and pretended to not recall anything about Muschamp rather than just laughing at his Bulldog-friendly criticism.

Herbstreit seems to be handling Muschamp’s trash language with grace, to be fair. After all, their respective maters are going to square off against each other for the first time in three decades, and there is a lot at stake.

After the Bulldogs take on the Buckeyes for a position in the national championship game on Saturday, we’ll see if Muschamp or Herbstreit is the last man laughing. Maybe Herby will offer to take Muschamp out to lunch if it’s Ohio State.
