Former Yankees Star Mariano Rivera: “If I am the owner, Aaron Boone wouldn’t stay!”

The dismal sweep of the Yankees by the Astros in the ALCS is still being processed by the team’s entire fan base. Include Mariano Rivera, a closer in the Hall of Fame, among those who are unhappy with the outcome.

Former Yankees Star Mariano Rivera: “If I am the owner, Aaron Boone wouldn’t stay!”

According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, Mariano Rivera expressed his displeasure on Wednesday while speaking at the Sports Forum of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives. He reportedly said that if he were in charge of the Yankees, he would not rehire manager Aaron Boone for the upcoming season.

“If I’m the owner, Aaron Boone won’t stay,” Rivera said. “When things don’t come out the way we want them to, all of the faults go on the manager, and somebody has to pay the price, and we won’t put that on the players.”

Rivera’s quotes, given in Spanish and translated by SNY, came before it was indicated the Yankees are planning to bring Boone back in 2023.

On the same day, Aaron Boone was announced as the Yankees’ 2023 head coach by Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. Rivera made his remarks.

“As far as Boone’s concerned, we just signed him, and for all the same reasons I listed a year ago, I believe he is a very good manager,” Steinbrenner said via The Associated Press. “There is no change there, I think.”

The real issue, though, was the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Despite having 92 and 99 victories in those seasons, Boone was a bad regular-season manager. The number of games this club dropped in 2021 prevented them, at the very least, from hosting a wild-card game at home. They should be ashamed of themselves for finishing 38-40 to end the 2022 season after setting a record-breaking pace.

That carried over into the playoffs, where his ALDS errors prolonged a series the Yankees couldn’t afford to play all the way to the conclusion. His ALCS errors caused the squad to be swept.

One of the most decorated MLB players of all time is Rivera, who played beside Boone on the 2003 World Series runners-up Bombers. From 1995 through 2013, he pitched with the Pinstripes, earning five World Series rings and 652 regular season saves. He was a 13-time All-Star and was unanimously elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, making him the first player in history to achieve this feat.

He was one of the best pitchers of all time in the regular season with a 2.21 ERA, and in the postseason, he excelled with a 0.70 career postseason ERA.
