Former Yankees Player Cameron Maybin Sets His Stance Clear On Yankees “Facial Hair Policy”
Former Yankee and MLB journeyman Cameron Maybin thinks the organization might benefit from removing its 50-year-old rule prohibiting its players from growing facial hair in order to draw in even more stars from the next generation of baseball players.
Former Yankees Player Cameron Maybin Sets His Stance Clear On Yankees “Facial Hair Policy”
Despite how deeply embedded the New York Yankees are in baseball’s history and fabric, the most recognizable team in the sport is finding it difficult to adapt to modern times.
The Yankees have fallen short of expectations for most of the time since their last World Series victory in 2009; in 2023, for example, they missed the playoffs and just avoided having a losing record for the first time in three decades.

He recently wrote about this restriction on the X platform, attributing it to many free players avoiding the Yankees. Juan Soto recently joined the squad, but because he’s never been the kind of man to wear a beard, he had no trouble signing his contract. However, several players have already declined to play for the Yankees due to the existence of that restriction.
Maybin said in a social media post that the Yankees’ policy excluding players with long hair or beards had hindered their ability to sign elite players over the years.
The Yankees' facial hair policy is archaic and, one day, may even be discriminatory (if it relates to religious beliefs of a player). Absurd that it still exists.

“You’d be surprised how much more attractive the Yankees would be if they got rid of that facial hair rule. You wouldn’t believe how many quality players just think it’s a wack rule to have,” Maybin tweeted out.
Maybin lambasted Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in a pair of tweets. This rule was put into effect by him in 1976. Even though 2024 is almost here, the regulation hasn’t significantly altered since then.

Here’s what Maybin said: “This might be an unpopular take to Yankees fans, but you’d be surprised how much more attractive the Yankees would be if they got rid of that facial hair rule. You wouldn’t believe how many quality players just think it’s a wack rule to have. I mean cmon we’re coming up on 2024 let that go already, and I swear it would be more appealing. Again this only comes from conversations I’ve had and experience from actually Playing.”
After the 2013 season, the Giants and Dodgers closer Brian Wilson refused to remove his famous beard in order to join the Yankees in the Bronx, costing the Yankees three-time All-Star reliever.
Should the @Yankees get rid of their no beard, no long hair policy and adapt with the times? Or should they continue with their longstanding tradition?https://t.co/JQmddmhRAn

David Price, the great pitcher for the Rays at the time, stated he would never sign with the Yankees due to the policy at around the same time. However, he later claimed he would shave if the Yankees were to get him.
at 2019, Maybin made a stop at the Yankees as part of a deal with Cleveland to continue his MLB career. After his playing career ended, Maybin became a fan favorite and began broadcasting Yankees games for YES Network in 2022.
