In a federal civil rights lawsuit filed on Wednesday, a former Penn State majorette captain alleged that her coach Heather Bean had harassed her for both gender and sexual purposes in addition to bullying and discrimination.

According to Kaitlyn Wassel’s lawsuit, former coach Heather Bean neglected to set proper boundaries with students, fat-shamed her and other majorettes, and neglected to disclose claims of sexual assault.

At least four other women who were on the Blue Band’s majorette squad made charges in the lawsuit, which spanned 31 pages. Several of them claimed to have contemplated suicide or acquired eating disorders.

Wassel claimed During her freshman year’s autumn semester, Bean started to torment her. Bean is charged with purposely putting the majorette through humiliation by making her wear an excessively undersized uniform and fat-shaming her.

Wassel claimed that as a result of the harassment, she developed an eating issue that accompanied her to college.

In addition, the complaint claims that in the autumn of 2018, after Wassel told her coach she had been sexually assaulted, Bean chastised her and declined to report the incident.

Other claims of bullying were Bean snooping around in Wassel’s social and sexual life and even accusing her of being the source of a lice epidemic since she was “such a whore.”

Citing the university’s standard policy of speaking out publicly against ongoing litigation, a Penn State spokesperson declined to comment on Thursday. The sole defendant identified is the institution.

“Bean … amassed a record of competitive successes, including winning national championships for Penn State,” Shubin wrote. “Sadly, the University prioritized the prestige Bean brought to the University over the safety and well-being of its students; it valued its reputation over its integrity and Kaitlyn and other majorettes were predictable causalities.”

Wassel, of Maryland, attended Penn State from 2018 through 2022. She studied engineering at what the lawsuit described as her “dream school.”

According to Penn Live, “Investigators found that Bean’s behaviour violated university policy, but they were unable to substantiate the complaints of sexual harassment and discrimination because there were no witnesses to some of the interactions.”

Furthermore, Penn State officials stated that because the former coach had already departed, they were unable to penalize her.
