Former NFL player Aqib Talib: stepping aside after brother’s arrest
Aqib Talib gave up playing football after the 2019 campaign. The Super Bowl champion had 35 interceptions in 12 NFL seasons. Talib joined the television industry once his playing days were over, just like many other former players before him. He’s had to temporarily halt that, though, due to a recent event.
Upon declaring his retirement in 2020, Talib received praise for his work as a broadcaster. But this week, Yaqub Talib, who was designated as a suspect in the murder of a coach at a minor football game in Texas, turned himself into police.
According to a statement provided by Aqib Talib’s attorney to TMZ, the former NFL star was onsite during the killing and “is extremely upset and heartbroken over this horrible loss of life.”
The statement read, “He would like to extend his sympathies to the victim’s family and to everyone who saw this tragic accident. Talib said he will “stand aside from his broadcasting obligations at Amazon to spend time with his family” in a statement to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Sunday.

He and his brother got into a heated discussion with a youth football coach. As a result, his brother shot coach Mike Hickmon five times, killing him later. It was claimed that the former Pro Bowl cornerback might have started the altercation. This has caused him to be the subject of many eyes. In the wake of the incident, he decided to stop broadcasting. No information has yet been released about the cornerback’s potential punishment for the event. He won’t be providing his voice for the Amazon team this season, though.
This was a Coach for a youth football team in Dallas, Texas. I don’t know this Coach and I’ve never met him a day in my life… but I do know that he didn’t deserve to have his life taken in front of his 9 year old son over no damn little football. RIP Coach Mike🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 pic.twitter.com/XGU4nk674Z

Texas minor football team North Dallas United Bobcats was coached by the Talib brothers. Mike Hickmon, a coach for the DEA Dragons, a different local team, was the gunshot victim. According to Dragons president Mike Freeman, some of the young kids on the squad saw the shooting.
Prior to the event, Talib was about to enter the broadcast booth for Amazon this season. He has made that shift before and won’t be the last. The most notable recent example is Tony Romo. He was a fantastic quarterback before becoming one of the most watched analysts on television at the moment.
