Former NFL Coach Bill Parcells Helped Needy Players By lending Them Money

Bill Parcells built a 19-year reputation as the head coach of the Giants, Patriots, Jets, and Cowboys, becoming recognized for both his strict personality and his on-field success. This man could win two Super Bowls, three conference championships, and utter proverbs like “You are what your record says you are.”

The idea that Parcells had a large heart despite the stiff façade he exhibited to the football world seems to be supported by a forthcoming book, though.

According to Gary Myers, a longstanding contributor to The New York Daily News, The Dallas Morning News, and other publications, Parcells has given former Giants in need loans totaling $4 million over the years.

“It’s just incredibly generous what he’s done with these guys,” Myers said. “Bill has loaned out $4 million to 20 players that played for him, who come to him in this financial crisis. Bill knows when they come to him it’s a last resort.”

And it’s not always a loan. In many cases, Parcells gifted the cash.

Myers continued: “I said to him, “Bill, you know, $4 million, you don’t expect anybody to pay you back. Why are you doing that?’

“And he said, ‘These guys have sacrificed so much for me with their bodies and their commitment.’”

For 19 years, Bill Parcells oversaw the NFL’s coaching staff. He coached the New England Patriots, New York Jets, and Dallas Cowboys after guiding the Giants to two Super Bowl victories.

He is still the only NFL coach to have taken four separate teams to the playoffs, including three that advanced to the conference final.

And perhaps the only one to give his athletes millions of dollars.

“I don’t think I know of any other coach who sits down and writes checks to his former players who are really in financial need,” Myers said. “It’s really a cool story.”
