Former NBA Guard Dwyane Wade’s Ex Intensifies Efforts To “Protect” Their Trans Daughter From “Tragic Situations”

The ex-wife of former NBA player Dwyane Wade has strengthened her stance to “protect” their trans daughter Zaya by opposing a formal name and gender change.

Siohvaughn Funches-Wade refuted her ex-filed husband’s application for a legal name and gender change, reiterating her position that she thinks it’s best for her 15-year-old daughter.

In public, Dwyane and his current spouse, Gabrielle Union, have defended Zaya and the trans community. Wade responded by branding his ex-wife an “absent parent” for choosing to oppose the motion he had filed for his daughter.

Dwyane Wade’s Ex Intensifies Efforts To “Protect” Their Trans Daughter From “Tragic Situations”

The ex-wife of Dwyane Wade maintains that by opposing her formal name change and gender transition, she is acting in Zaya’s best interests.

In a statement released on Friday, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade claims that “countless full-grown famous adults” have experienced “serious effects” from anxiety and depression, including committing suicide. She attributes this to “public pressure and scrutiny.”

“I have both the mandate and privilege of protecting my children from these tragic events, well as the myriad of other negative things that have a tendency to impact those living in the limelight, but time will fail me to mention them all,” She adds.

Funches-Wade argued in court documents on Wednesday that she wants 15-year-old Zaya to decide once she’s 18 if she’d like to legally change her name and gender because she fears her father, Wade, is trying to influence her for monetary gain.

“I have concerns that [Wade] may be pressuring our child to move forward with the name and gender change in order to capitalize on the financial opportunities that he has received from companies,” she said in the filing.

Dwyane’s Response to the allegations

In response to the objection, Wade posted a statement on Instagram on Thursday.

“Since this must be a new way of parenting, I guess I have to address these allegations here, which is a damn shame,” he wrote.

Wade said he saw social media posts that claimed he was pressuring Zaya to change her name legally. “These are serious and harmful allegations that have hurt our children,” he said.

“While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s attempt to fight Zaya’s identity and her unwavering attempt to drag me through the mud, I’m very disappointed that she continuously finds ways of centring herself and HER needs without regard to her children,” he continued.

Wade said that his ex-wife had previously tried to harm him, and as an NBA player, he was granted sole custody of their two children. He alleged Funches-Wade does not have a relationship with Zaya.
