Former Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz Questions Team’s Approach, Calls It A Zoo

In North American sports, the Dallas Cowboys are the most valued franchise. Jerry Jones, to put it simply, has created an empire. but there’s Dalton Schultz who absolutely hates it!

But that dominion has expanded well beyond the football field. Building AT&T Stadium and The Star, the team’s headquarters that include a practice facility and strip mall, came at a cost of $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion, respectively.

In a recent interview with “The Pat McAfee Show,” Schultz opened up on his experiences, highlighting the Texans’ football-centric mindset and the impressive facilities of the Cowboys.

Dalton Schultz spent five years as a member of the Dallas Cowboys and says he was always in a “zoo-like” atmosphere.

Looking back on his tenure with the Cowboys, Schultz compared the organization’s practices to a show, emphasizing attention-grabbing and optimizing brand visibility.

Before signing a one-year contract with the Houston Texans before the 2018 season, Dalton Schultz played his first five seasons with the Cowboys.

Given that Dallas was all he had ever known in the NFL, Schultz claimed he was terrified to leave the city. However, upon arriving to the Texans, he was relieved to see that the group’s  “focus is just football.”

“That was one of the first things that kind of stuck out to me, is like, it feels like much more – I don’t want to say college because it’s not – but the focus is just football, you know what I mean?” Schultz said on Wednesday

Schultz added, “Going back and telling some people how kind of being around the Cowboys’ practice facility, game day, describing some of the interactions and stuff that you see on a daily basis surprised a lot of people.

“They’re like, ‘Holy c**p, that actually happens at a practice facility?’ You think it’s normal, and then you come to a place like this.”

Fans being able to see the squad train through one-way mirrors has reportedly been judged weird, Schultz stated, making the facility feel like “a zoo.”

“There’s people literally going on tours while you’re lifting in the weight room. And they’ve got, like, they’ve got a one-way mirror for people to like look at. It’s a zoo, dude. There’s people tapping on the glass trying to get people’s attention as they’re doing power cleans or what not. It’s just, it’s different.”

“That’s the brand that they’ve built. That’s what Jerry Jones likes. That’s the way that they run things, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just you don’t realize how many eyeballs and how much that can maybe distract from stuff just in a locker room being in the facility until you go somewhere else, and you’re like, ‘Holy c**p, dude, there’s none of that.’”

Schultz caught 59 of 88 passes in 2023, gaining 635 yards and five touchdowns. In terms of yards, yards per target, and touchdowns, it was his second-best season. He also developed into a more potent downfield threat, averaging the most yards per grab (10.8) of his career.

Given the resources available to them and how potential the Texans were, Schultz is in a strong position to be an important member of an AFC contender for many years to come.
