If the Florida State Seminoles are the only unbeaten Power 5 team in college football at the end of the season, quarterback Brock Glenn of Florida State says the squad should “absolutely” be regarded as national champions.

Despite being passed over for a playoff spot and having many bowl game opt-outs, Glenn stated that players have discussed the possibility of hoisting a banner and that the Seminoles are still focused on winning the Capital One Orange Bowl and completing an unbeaten season.

In a type of consolation match, No. 5 Florida State takes on No. 6 Georgia in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Saturday. The Seminoles (13-0) were not included in the CFP, while the Bulldogs (12-1) fell to No. 4 Alabama (12-1) in the SEC title game, 27-24. Georgia is able to make its own separate CFP argument, but it does not carry as much weight as Florida State.

The two remaining unbeaten Power Five teams, Michigan and Washington, might face off in the national championship game if they win their semifinal games against Texas and Alabama, respectively.

If the Huskies or Longhorns don’t advance to the College Football Playoff final, Florida State quarterback Brock Glenn stated that the Seminoles should “absolutely” be regarded as national winners, according to ESPN. Kalen DeLoach, a linebacker for FSU, made the same statement.

“It’s only appropriate,” DeLoach said. “Nothing else needs to be said if we’re the only undefeated team.”

“The Orange Bowl is an awesome bowl, one of the best in the country, and we have a great opportunity in front of us playing Georgia,” Glenn said on Thursday. We’re taking this game seriously because it’s still important to us. Our attention is on the players there in order to win the game.”

Prior to conference championship week, Florida State was rated No. 4 in the CFP rankings. The Seminoles finished the regular season undefeated, defeating No. 14 Louisville 16-6 in the ACC title.

However, when quarterback Jordan Travis sustained a season-ending ankle injury against North Alabama on November 18, it may have sealed the Seminoles’ fate. Travis was one of the Heisman Trophy candidates, and the football team suffered the next week against Florida with Tate Rodemaker, who suffered a head injury. Third-string freshman quarterback Brock Glenn played in the ACC championship game.

The Seminoles would be adopting a strategy from UCF if they were the final team standing and desired to pursue a national championship. The Knights missed the CFB Playoff, but they still finished 13-0 and won the national championship in 2017.
