“Fingers Crossed”: San Francisco 49ers Legend Opens Up on the Current Quarterback Situation in San Francisco, Just Like His Situation with Joe Montana in the 90s

Trey Jimmy Garoppolo will be replaced as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers by Lance, as attempts to trade Garoppolo this summer were fruitless. Finally, the seasoned player consented to a contract modification and continued employment as a backup.

As he begins his second season in the NFL, Lance may feel additional pressure, especially in light of the fact that Garoppolo guided the team to the NFC Championship Game the previous year. The San Francisco 49ers supporters may demand a change if the team has early difficulties.

The 49ers switched from Joe Montana to Steve Young at one point. It was awkward, to put it mildly. With Jimmy Garoppolo returning from exile to play as the No. 2 quarterback for a club, he led to one Super Bowl and just missed another, the San Francisco 49ers are now stumbling once more.

Steve Young comments on Trey Young/Jimmy Garoppolo situation at San Francisco 49ers

“I’ve got my fingers crossed,” Young told Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

“This is great. This is hairy stuff.”

Yes, it is. Undoubtedly, the situation is tricky. Garoppolo took a pay cut of more than $19 million to play the season as Trey Lance’s backup after the San Framcisco 49ers failed to find a team to pick up the last year of his contract. As long as Lance is healthy and succeeds.

“In some ways, Jimmy being there, holds your own feet to the fire that can be productive,” Young said of Lance. “It depends how he takes it in. It seems he takes in productively, and it can be thought in of the positive.”

At the start of his career in San Francisco 49ers, Young was primarily Joe Montana’s backup. An injury allowed him to take over in 1991, and he eventually made a name for himself with an MVP season in 1992. If Lance, the No. 3 overall selection in 2021, can get beyond the danger of Garoppolo on the depth chart, he has a tonne of potential as well.
