“Feels Like Work” – Ex-College Football Coach Nick Saban Makes an Honest Admission on Not Watching Football Games
Rarely does Nick Saban miss a national championship game. Even though Alabama’s Crimson Tide missed the playoffs, the head coach is in Los Angeles to participate in the ESPN broadcasts before Georgia vs. TCU. Even though Nick Saban may be the best college football coach in history, it doesn’t mean he enjoys watching the game. It’s familiar ground for him because he was on comparable broadcasts for the 2020 CFP championship in New Orleans and the 2014 BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl.
Marty and McGee on the SEC Network served as the starting point of Saban’s interview vehicle wash. Their discussion ranged from the difficulty of maintaining success to more esoteric subjects.
Nick Saban discusses not watching football
Saban has been a football coach since 1973, and despite having been away from the sport for 50 years, he still thinks like a coach when he watches other games.
“I don’t even like to watch games, to be honest with you, because it just feels like work,” Saban told Marty and McGee.
“I see a team run a formation and a play and I think ‘How do we adjust to that? What would we do? How would we block that stunt when they do a certain blitz on defense.’ This is no enjoyment to me. I might as well be at the office getting ready to play the game.”

Before falling short in the ninth slot this year, Saban guided Alabama to seven of the first eight playoff appearances. He has a 7-3 record in national championship games; after falling to Georgia last January, he is now 3-3 in the CFP era.

If you were Nick Saban, it would be challenging to adapt to enjoying football games without acting as a coach. It’s reasonable to say that Saban didn’t appreciate seeing his SEC rival in Georgia destroy TCU in the national championship game on Monday night.
