Fantasy Football 2023: NFL Head Coaches And Offensive Coordinators

Football is a team sport, but the quarterback and head coach influence a team’s performance the most. Even if you have a top-notch signal- or play-caller, you probably still need a strong supporting cast to compete for a championship. But at least you’ll get off to a fast start. Just ask the Chiefs and Patriots, who have established or continue to preserve recent NFL dynasties with the help of elite QB-HC combinations.

Five clubs made changes at the head coaching position in the NFL offseason of 2023, which saw an average amount of new head coaching hiring. There are still likely to be many personnel and strategy differences that fantasy football owners need to be aware of, even though that represented just half of the 10 new signings from the previous season.

The most noteworthy of the new head coaches is Sean Payton, who aims to restore order to Denver following the failure of the Nathaniel Hackett experiment. Regarding Hackett, he will hold a major position as the Jets’ offensive coordinator and be charged with restoring Aaron Rodgers to MVP status once more in 2023.

By 2023, it will be clear which NFL quarterbacks, including Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts, and Josh Allen, belong in the top tier of quarterbacks. How about the head coaches, though?

Fantasy Football 2023: New NFL head coaches and offensive coordinators

Sean Payton (Broncos)
Season: 1st with DEN, 16th as HC
Career record: 152-89 | Playoffs: 9-8 (1-0 in Super Bowls)

Payton is arguably the only person who can revive Russell Wilson and revitalize the Broncos simultaneously. Late in his Saints stint, regular-season greatness didn’t always convert to January outcomes as you might have liked, but he got the best of all his quarterbacks, from Drew Brees to Teddy Bridgewater to Jameis Winston. Additionally, his tough leadership should guarantee genuine buy-in from everyone on board.

Eric Bieniemy, Commanders OC

Bieniemy wants to establish himself independently of Andy Reid. He made a lateral shift to Washington to coach alongside Ron Rivera for that reason.

Under Bieniemy, the Chiefs frequently finished in the lower half of the top 10 in pass-play percentage. Since Washington only threw on 52.8 percent of its plays in 2023 (good for 23rd in the NFL), it is reasonable to predict that they will play a little more aggressively this season. Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel will receive stockpiles as a result.

Shane Steichen (Colts)
Season: 1st with IND, 1st as HC
Career record: N/A | Playoffs: N/A

Steichen has a challenging task ahead of him: he must satisfy owner Jim Irsay while transforming inexperienced rookie QB Anthony Richardson into a confident NFL passer. Despite this, Steichen was cool under pressure while managing both Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts in Los Angeles and Philadelphia, respectively.

Steichen was hired from the Eagles’ coaching staff, much like the Colts did with their previous two hires. Philadelphia had the fourth-highest run-play percentage (49.7%) last season and had a nearly equal distribution of passing and rushing attempts. If the Colts’ offensive line plays well after a poor season, they could be able to succeed with that style of attack.

Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys OC

Schottenheimer replacing Kellen Moore is unlikely to delight many Cowboys supporters. The fact is that Schottenheimer’s presence would appear to suggest a decrease in Dak Prescott’s passing attempts, so fantasy football owners probably won’t be very happy either.

Over the course of twelve seasons in the NFL, Schottenheimer has held the position of offensive coordinator three times. His squad has just ever finished in the top half of the league in passing attempts. That happened back in 2008 when the Jets were 13th in pass attempts.
