The Detroit Lions debuted a new appearance and a new helmet design on Wednesday, after the NFL permitted clubs to have an extra helmet starting last season. The new helmet departs from the squad’s customary silver helmets and for the first time matches the Honolulu Blue uniform of the team. In the 1950s, the team had previously had blue helmets.

The new helmet is a light blue that has never been used by an NFL club and incorporates a retro emblem to celebrate the franchise’s history. It will be worn with the team’s all-gray jerseys.

Some supporters had concerns about the new design despite the team’s smooth social media video announcing the helmets.

During the 2023–24 season, the Lions will use the helmets with their all-gray alternative outfits in two games: Week 18 will be played against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football on October 30.

The new helmet also features a gray matte facemask. The shade of blue featured on the helmet has never been worn in the NFL before.
