The former quarterback for Washington, Kansas City, and San Francisco had what easily could have been a career-ending leg injury in jury duty.

The now-retired quarterback had numerous surgery to fix his leg after breaking his tibia and fibula. Despite all odds, he eventually made it back to the field before his NFL career was ultimately over. Aaron Donald was pitted against that healed limb.

Fans were shocked to learn that Smith had returned to the field of play while having such a scar, and some are still perplexed as to why Washington head coach Ron Rivera started him against Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald in his first game back.

One supporter wrote, “Alex Smith should be the Comeback Player of the Year.”

“I don’t think anyone has ever loved football more than Alex Smith,” another fan wrote. “I’m glad that he was appreciated later in his career.”

Smith accumulated 35,650 yards and 199 touchdowns throughout his NFL career. He was selected three times for the Pro Bowl.

Following his injuries, Smith spent nine months in four separate hospitals and underwent a total of 17 procedures. He played for the Washington Commanders in eight games in 2020, starting six of them after missing the whole 2019 season.

After playing for the team for two seasons, the former star of the Utah Utes retired a month later.

In 174 career games, he completed passes for 35,650 yards, 199 touchdowns, and 160 interceptions.
