EXPLAINED: How Could Baker Mayfield Get Back His $3.5 Million He Lost After Agreeing a Pay Cut?

After dealing for Baker Mayfield, the Carolina Panthers appear to have finally found their starting quarterback. Although it wasn’t as wild as the fight for Deshaun Watson, the Panthers eventually got their guy. Mayfield, the new Panthers quarterback, will continue to be compensated by the Browns this year.

Mayfield had a guaranteed $18.86 million from the Browns for this season, but he has now accepted a revised contract that lowers that sum for Cleveland. Now, Mayfield will receive $10.5 million from the Browns and $5 million from the Panthers, and he will consent to a contract restructuring that will prevent him from receiving the remaining money as a guaranteed salary.

According to a report, Mayfield still has a chance to earn the whole $18.86 million, provided he meets specific objectives. His pay for this season will now be counted as $10.5 million against the Browns’ cap and the remaining amount against the Panthers’ cap.

He will get $300,000 if the Panthers’ total offense ranks in the top five in the NFC or the top ten in the NFL. He will get $300,000 if Carolina scores more points than any team in the top 10 of the NFL or the top five of the NFC.

Mayfield will win $30,000 if his completion rate, after a minimum of 224 tries, places him in the top five of the NFC or the top 10 in the NFL. A $500,000 incentive for making the Pro Bowl will also be given to him. If Carolina triumphs in the divisional round, Mayfield will be awarded $500,000. Mayfield will get $600,000 if the club wins the NFC Championship. And he will get $750,000 if the Panthers win the Super Bowl.
