Ex-NBA Player Dwyane Wade Explains Why He Left The Florida Home
The Miami Heat’s all-time leading scorer, Dwyane Wade, no longer resides in Florida, in part due to the political atmosphere there.
The future Hall of Famer revealed it when speaking with Rachel Nichols on this week’s edition of Showtime’s “Headliners,” a clip from which was made available to the public on Wednesday. The player has a 15-year-old transgender daughter.

Wade mentioned that one of the reasons he left Florida was due to how his family felt living there when he was asked about Florida legislators who had applauded him while promoting anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

Wade, who was born in Chicago and played for the Heat for 15 seasons, claimed his family relocated to California when he retired from the NBA in 2019. In 2020, Zaya, his 15-year-old daughter, came out as transgender.
“That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state. A lot of people don’t know that,” Wade told Rachel Nichols on Showtime’s “Headliners.” “I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.
“I mean, obviously, the taxes are great. Having Wade County is great. But my family would not be accepted or feel comfortable there.”

Wade made this choice in order to save his daughter Zaya. The 15-year-old made the choice to alter both her name and gender. Zaya has publicly commended Wade for his unwavering support of her decision to live as a transgender woman on several occasions.
