Ex-MMA Star Javier Baez Takes On A Knife-Wielding Attacker

When a guy brandished a knife in front of him, a former mixed martial arts fighter Javier Baez leapt to his own rescue.

Ex-fighter Javier Baez was sitting in his car when he was approached by a guy brandishing a knife in a Miami parking lot on Wednesday morning, at 4 a.m., after going out on Halloween night, he told various sources.

According to Local News 10 in Miami, Marrero reportedly struck one of Baez’s car windows before getting inside via the driver’s side door and trying to stab him.

When Baez got out of the car, he attempted to calm things down, but that’s when Marrero reportedly grabbed another knife.

The sole issue? He targeted former mixed martial arts fighter Baez.

The culprit, Omar Marrero, 50, is shown in surveillance footage that was made public and has since gone viral, lunging toward Baez as soon as he gets out of his car. Then, like he had done a thousand times in the gym, the 5-2-1 fighter responded, blocking Marrero’s arm, grabbing him by the chest, and performing a move comparable to The Rock Bottom.

He restrained him until the cops could come.

“Guy was out there screaming on the phone, literally was fighting for a while with some woman,” the bantamweight fighter told a CBS affiliate. “He tapped on my door window. I told him to leave me alone, and then he came at me with a knife. I told him to leave me alone. I’m calling the cops. I hope he doesn’t break my window. That’s all I cared about.”

“When you train so many times, it becomes just a reflect. Once it came to that, it’s all instincts. I couldn’t do much but just react,” Baez continued. “I’ve been training my whole life; black belt jiu-jitsu, wrestled in college, I’ve got eight pro fights, MMA masters. I’ve got great training partners.”
