Ex- Giants’ HC Joe Judge Behind Patriots Receiving Punishment For NFL Rule Violation

It has been revealed why the Patriots were unable to participate in the NFL’s optional organized team activities for two days, and it has to do with former Giants head coach Joe Judge.

Additional information became available following the league’s Wednesday punishment, which found that New England had broken a number of offseason regulations. According to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Judge presided over a few special teams meetings and some internal scheduling mistakes were the main causes of the violations.

The breaches resulted in a $50,000 punishment for head coach Bill Belichick, according to Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal. Joe Judge, a former head coach for the New York Giants and current assistant coach, was the cause of the NFL’s actions.

According to Boston Sports Journal, on May 9 the NFL Players Association reported that “Patriots’ Special Teams Coach Joe Judge directed special teams players to be at the Club’s facility longer than the maximum of four hours permitted during Phase Two of the Club’s program.”

According to the records that Bedard was able to get, the infractions happened as a result of “special teams workshops” that Judge delivered on May 1, May 2, and May 4. These workshops were held 20 minutes before to the meetings and practices for offensive and defensive players.

The Patriots argued that these “workshops” were not mandatory.

Since the NFL-NFLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement specifies that players aren’t permitted to remain at the facility for more than four days a week or more than four hours a day, the NFLPA filed a complaint on the situation on May 4.

Following the NFL’s decision, the Patriots had their OTAs on May 25 and May 30 cancelled. Bill Belichick, the coach, was also assessed a $50,000 punishment for the infractions.
