Even After Getting Yelled At, Russell Wilson Thinks Sean Payton Trusts Him

The Broncos, led by Russell Wilson, lost a hard-fought game on the road on Saturday against the Detroit Lions. With a 7-7 record, their hopes of making the playoffs appear to be in jeopardy, and head coach Sean Payton was not impressed with the team’s performance. After the play call didn’t work out, he was even spotted yelling at his quarterback, Wilson, from the sidelines.

Even After Getting Yelled At, Russell Wilson Thinks Sean Payton Trusts Him

Take a look at the video. It appears like the type of tongue-lashing a player receives when he does or does not do something that he has been told on several previous times to do or not do. We can’t hear what Payton is saying, and he declined to answer even the most straightforward questions about it after the game.

To his credit, Wilson stood there and took it. Maybe he was stunned. Maybe he knew Payton had a point. Maybe, if it happens again, Wilson will give a little of it back.

Given the impassioned show, Wilson was questioned after the game if he thought Payton still had trust in his quarterback.

“Yeah, I mean, of course,” Wilson told reporters. “I think the biggest thing is we’re trying to score a touchdown there. I think we all want to score there. I think that’s our focus and that’s — you want a coach that’s passionate. We want players that are too, and everything else. And so, we wanted to score a touchdown. I think my biggest thing is always trying to focus on the next play and unfortunately, those few plays, we didn’t get the touchdowns there, so that was the only unfortunate part about that part.”

The situation came up earlier, when Wilson was asked what Payton’s message was during his rant.

“Yeah, I mean, obviously, we wanted to score that drive,” Wilson said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t. I think, more than anything else, we’re just frustrated we didn’t score there, because we were going to make that 28-14. Obviously, they end up stopping us, and that was the really, honestly, the disappointing part, because of that play where [fullback Michael] Burton got in. I think that’s just we’re a little frustrated.”

Wilson emerged to the sideline when the coach decided to opt for a field goal, and Payton could be seen scolding his quarterback. Many thought that was an odd response because, in each of those controversial judgments, a challenge flag might have confirmed a score for the Broncos. Rather, it appeared as though the coach became enraged with his player.

The way Payton acted, which seemed to be an attempt to distance himself from his choice to not throw the flag and vent his resentment at Russell Wilson, infuriated fans.

Someone tweeted:

“Sean Payton is a terrible football coach.”

One more person added:

“Sean Payton is an extreme a**h*le.”

He continued by saying that he was angry with the call and that the officials’ choices had frustrated him. When asked why he targeted Russell Wilson, the coach responded as follows:

“What I talk with Russell about is none of your business.”
