ESPN’s Mina Kimes Suggests A Theory On NFL Fans’ Anger Towards Pop Star Taylor Swift

Since hate is such a powerful term, our ESPN friend Mina Kimes—who is well-known for both her knowledge and her passion for the Seattle Seahawks talks about the hate Taylor Swift is receiving!

ESPN’s Mina Kimes Suggests A Theory On NFL Fans’ Anger Towards Pop Star Taylor Swift

However, when we consider her comments on the reasons for certain NFL fans’, primarily male, outrage when they see Taylor Swift on TV – a phenomenon that is set to skyrocket now that “her” Kansas City Chiefs are playing in the Super Bowl?

Kimes employs terms like “annoyed” and “upset” in a courteous manner. She also makes her point.

And while some fans have hated Kimes for being an ESPN female football analyst, she observes a different kind of resentment being aimed at the 14-time Grammy winner.

“Mina, you can have specific experience and knowledge how men, or cavemen, have reacted to you invading the man cave,” Dan Le Batard said to Kimes on Friday on “Pablo Torre Finds Out” during a discussion about Swift. “You particularly, you coming into the football sphere and sitting next to Ryan Clark and [Dan] Orlovsky and Domonique [Foxworth] and having your opinion and looking the way you do, looking like most people don’t look when talking about football over the last 50 years. You’ve invaded this space and have been made to feel welcome by colleagues, but I think the constituency, the customer, has made that somewhat difficult for you. That’s been an obstacle course.”

“You have pretty different dynamics at play,” Kimes replied. “For me, a lot of the misogyny or resistance I’ve encountered over the years has been men feeling suspicious of, ‘Why is she here? What credibility does she have? I must know more,’ etc. I think with the Taylor Swift backlash — and it’s not universal, and maybe it’s even being overstated — but the impression I get is that people are annoyed with the idea of other fans being allowed into their space.

I don’t think most men who watch football games are really upset by the fact that they’re showing Taylor Swift for two seconds. I think they’re upset with the idea of what it signifies — ‘Oh, other people are now being allowed in here?’ — or the product is being deluded in some ways. I think that’s kind of a different phenomenon.”

Although Taylor Swift’s decision to just go to games in support of Travis Kelce has angered many, Kimes thinks this is because many don’t think the NFL would improve if more people join it. Nevertheless, the NFL hasn’t altered as a result of the many A-list celebrities who have dated NFL players and attended games.

After making her debut at a Chiefs game on September 24, Swift—the megastar who won two more Grammy Awards on Sunday night and revealed a new album—has been a regular fixture at games throughout the season, including all three of Kansas City’s postseason victories this year.

A portion of NFL fans appear to find it annoying that television networks regularly feature Swift during Chiefs games.

It’s certainly stranger than Taylor Swift’s presence in and of itself, the uproar around her appearance on NFL television for less than a minute during a three-plus-hour telecast.
