ESPN Jay Williams’ Can Accept Anything But That Caitlin Clark Is Great
The all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball is now Caitlin Clark. However, not everybody is a believer. ESPN’s Jay Williams stated on Saturday’s “College GameDay” program that he is not certain the Iowa player belongs among the all-time greats.
ESPN Jay Williams’ Can Accept Anything But That Caitlin Clark Is Great
“I think the way she plays, the pizzazz, is, she’s probably the most prolific scorer the game of basketball has ever seen,” Williams said, comparing her to Golden State Warriors champion Stephen Curry. “I am unwilling … to say that she is great yet.”
On Thursday, Clark surpassed Kelsey Plum with a trademark three-pointer that shattered the record. With 3,569 points now in hand, Clark has a chance to surpass Pete Maravich’s NCAA record of 3,667 points.

On Saturday’s episode of “College GameDay,” Andraya Carter praised Clark for her “magnetic pull” on spectators, both at home and away from the stadium. She also called her a brilliant player.
However, Jay Williams, a different commentator on the program, didn’t think Clark was outstanding just yet.
Despite her success with the points, he contended that she still needed to lead Iowa to a national title, which is, in his opinion, the real test of excellence.
OK, I think she is the Stephen Curry of women’s college basketball,” Williams said. “I think she has changed the dynamics of the way the game is played. I think the way she plays, the pizzazz, like, she’s probably the most prolific scorer the game of basketball has ever seen.

“I am unwilling — and maybe it’s the Kobe mentorship around me — to say that she is great yet. I think she is the most prolific scorer the game has ever seen. I hold great, or the levels of immortality or the pantheon, to when you win championships. … So I’m not saying that she’s not at a high, high, high level, but for her to go to the states of immortality in my opinion, it has to culminate with your team winning a championship.”
Williams cited Diana Taurasi, who won three consecutive national championships and back-to-back national player of the year awards, and Breanna Stewart, who won four straight titles and the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award each time, as examples of players deserving of the description.

Greatness is attained by players who exhibit constant excellence over an extended length of time. When you get to the point where you can actually break the record for most points scored by a college basketball player in history, you can confidently claim the title of “great” and will live on in the annals of time.
For the most of the 2023–24 season, she stayed close to the top of the AP Top 25 poll; but, with a defeat to Nebraska, they fell two positions from No. 2.

Clark, who also broke the Iowa single-game record with 49 points against the Wolverines, needs just 99 more points to surpass Pete Maravich and take the top spot in college basketball history for both men’s and women’s teams. Against Indiana on February 22, she will have her next opportunity to get closer to that most recent record.
Why does Caitlin Clark wear 22?
She replaced former Iowa standout Kathleen Doyle, who was selected in the 2020 Indiana Fever draft. “I didn’t get to wear (22) in high school because Dowling always wore odd numbers,” Clark said. “My birthday is January 22, so 22 is my number.”
When did Caitlin Clark do the hand gesture?
I live in a ghetto too. All year long, you guys told me that. But you guys don’t say anything when others do it,” she continued, alluding to Clark’s March 26 gesture against Louisville.
Sabrina Ionescu is a straight sniper. I get that Steph Curry won. I mean he’s the greatest shooter of all time but seeing her shoot and Caitlin Clark do what she did earlier this week just shows the growth in Women’s Basketball. Love to see it. pic.twitter.com/HPHnNwpc4g

Whose record did Caitlin break?
In the game between Iowa and Michigan, Hawkeyes point guard Caitlin Clark broke the record established by current WNBA star Kelsey Plum in 2017 with a long three-pointer, securing her spot in history just over two minutes in. In 139 games, Plum scored 3,527 points in his career. At just 126, Clark has now scored 3,569.
