Eli Manning Speaks On Arch Manning & Texas QB Decision

Manning recalled how most quarterbacks, including the future Giants signal-caller back when he attended Ole Miss, entered college knowing they would redshirt for a year, wouldn’t play right away, and still have three years of eligibility left. Eli Manning, an NFL quarterback, thinks the 18-year-old ought to stay right where he is.

“No,” Eli Manning responded when asked by Zach Gelb if his nephew should enter the transfer portal. “He picked Texas because that’s where he wants to be. That’s where he wants to play football. He likes Coach Sarkisian and his offense and what they’re doing.

“… Obviously, the plan was maybe Ewers would go into the NFL, but he’s there. It’s another year for Arch to mature, learn an offense, get bigger, stronger in the weight room and always be prepared to play. You never know what’s going to be happen.”

During his redshirt season the previous year, Manning was ranked below Ewers and Maalik Murphy in the depth chart. With Murphy’s move to Duke, Manning will start as Texas’ number-two quarterback in the next campaign.

Eli Manning is certain that his nephew will only gain from another campaign in which he learns the ropes from Ewers.

At the end of April, Arch will have a 15-day window to use the transfer portal.

The only other time Arch appeared for the Longhorns was in the third quarter of their thrashing of Texas Tech on November 24. He entered during the third quarter and completed two of five passes for thirty yards, aside from kneeling down the last snap of the Big 12 championship game.

Arch is able to classify this as a red-shirt season because of his little playing time.
