Eagles Wide Receiver Devon Allen Runs 4th Fastest 110m Hurdles In 2023

This past weekend, Devon Allen was back at the races.

The two-time Olympian Allen, who rejoined football for the first time since playing NCAA football in 2016, finished second in the 110-meter hurdles at the USATF New York City Grand Prix on Saturday with a mark of 13.04 seconds. Allen made the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad last year.

Starting with the event at the Penn Relays, which he won with a time of 13.46 in April, Allen has lowered his time in each of the five 110-meter hurdles races he has participated in this year.

While his timing was just slightly slower than that of fellow American Daniel Roberts (13.01 seconds), it was still quick enough to tie him for the fourth-fastest time in the world so far this year.

Following the 2022 NFL season, Allen signed a reserve/future deal with Philadelphia. He later discussed finding time for both sports in an interview with the NBC broadcast.

He had postponed his football career to focus on track and field, and in the last two Olympics, he placed fifth and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

On the NBC Sports broadcast, he was questioned about how he balances football with track & field.

“It’s going well. You know, balancing both is difficult, but I’m having a lot of fun,” he said. “As long as I can stay healthy, it’s good to compete against these guys in high-quality competition. You know, 13.01 and 13.04 is nothing to scoff at, so we’re ready to go.”

Next up for Allen is the USATF Outdoor Championships, which will take place from July 6–9 in Eugene, Oregon. He has stated that he would need to pick a choice if he were to earn a spot in the global championships, which would be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 18–27.

“Yeah, I still don’t have a plan of what I’m going to do with worlds being, you know, during training camp,” Allen told KPIC-TV in Oregon ahead of the NYC Grand Prix. “Obviously, it’d be nice to compete at worlds and also it would be nice to be at training camp so I can make the 53-man roster. So, obviously it’s going to be a little bit of a decision, but I’m not going to worry about that, like I said,  until I make the world championship team. USA is a competitive meet. Just got to focus on doing that first.”
