Dwayne Johnson-Owned XFL’s Founder Vince McMahon and Former Commissioner Oliver Luck Settle Wrongful Termination Lawsuit

The XFL was formed in 2018 by WWE executive Vince McMahon as a reboot and successor to the XFL, which he launched in 2001. In comparison to the NFL, McMahon re-founded the XFL to establish a league with fewer off-field scandals and quicker, easier play. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the league’s activities progressively came to a halt after only five weeks of play in its first 2020 season, and it filed for bankruptcy on April 13.

In August of that year, actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, his ex-wife and business manager Dany Garcia, and their partner RedBird Capital paid $15 million for the XFL.

Oliver Luck, the former XFL commissioner, was seeking the $22.8 million he said was owed to him during the last years of his contract and prior to the XFL’s closure due to the epidemic. McMahon had claimed he dismissed Luck for reason, citing his employment of wide receiver Antonio Callaway, and accused Luck of basically abandoning his job when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic in the days after its declaration.

Oliver Luck, the former commissioner of the XFL, and Vince McMahon, the former owner of the league, have resolved a wrongful termination claim that Luck filed in 2020.

“The parties have amicably resolved this matter, and wish each other well in future endeavors,” a statement from Luck’s attorneys at Dobrowksi Stafford LLP reads via The Athletic.

When the XFL returns on Feb. 18, 2023, with a 40-game regular-season schedule and three playoff games, the Walt Disney Company and ESPN have secured an exclusive multiyear arrangement to broadcast the league’s regular-season and postseason games. The XFL’s rebirth is well underway, with the league’s owners also announcing the eight coaches who will lead the league into its 2023 comeback.

With Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia at the helm, it’ll be difficult to expect anything other than continuous success for the XFL as it returns to prominence alongside NFL.
