Making things about himself has never been Tua Tagovailoa’s thing. The quarterback for the Miami Dolphins is, for some reason, often brought up.

Dolphins’ QB Tua Tagovailoa On Facing Media Criticism: “I could care less”

Since the Dolphins picked Tagovailoa with the No. 5 selection in 2020, he has been the subject of much discussion in the NFL. There have been arguments over his work ethic and health, as well as concerns about his arm strength and potential to lead the Dolphins for many years to come.

Despite his repeated claims that he is uninterested in such outside conversations, Tagovailoa made it apparent on Wednesday that he is aware of them.

Tagovailoa spoke with the media on Wednesday afternoon on the notion that he is a “system quarterback,” supported by the players surrounding him.

“I understand that my platform and who I am in this league as a quarterback makes me, if you want, polarizing. Whether I’m the best, whether I’m the worst, I could care less. I don’t listen to it,” he said

“I keep receipts. We all have a way of how we do things. But all the narratives about it, sure. I am only good with Tyreek in. You’re right,” he said, sarcastically. “That is the only time that I’m at my best. You’re right. I’m only good when Jaylen [Waddle] is in.”

After guiding Alabama to a national title in his collegiate career, Tagovailoa had high expectations going into the NFL.

However, his first two NFL seasons were marred by controversy as Miami’s offense faltered and tales of a tense relationship between Tagovailoa and Miami’s then-coach Brian Flores circulated.

“If that’s what the narrative needs to be, and we’re able to win games and we’re able to go where we want to go as a team, I am the worst football player if that’s what you want. I don’t care. I really don’t.”

After defeating the Jets 30 to 0 last week, the Dolphins will put their season to the test when they play the Cowboys, Ravens, and Bills in their final games.

In 2023, Tagovailoa is enjoying one of his greatest seasons to date. With 3,921 yards to lead the NFL, he is on track to become Miami’s first QB to reach 4,000 yards since 1992’s Dan Marino. In addition, Tagovailoa is tied for fifth place in throwing touchdowns (25), leads in yards per pass attempt (8.6), and has the second-best passer rating (106.0).
