Does NFL Have A Strict Cleats Rule? Explained

All teams in 2017 received a message from the NFL outlining updated rules for on-field footwear. Players were permitted to wear bespoke cleats during pre-game warm-ups as long as they don’t display any commercial or trademark insignia other than Nike, UA, and adidas, the three league-approved brands.

Does NFL Have A Strict Cleats Rule? Not Anymore but Has Certain Restrictions

NFL players are now allowed to wear customized cleats during pregame warmups and the entire game, changing the rigid rule that all club footwear follow to particular color and pattern specifications.

Such customized cleats have not yet been approved. Players may choose whichever cleat colors they like outside of games, providing there are no offensive graphics or unauthorized branding. Any political views cannot be displayed on the cleats. Although the shoe can only be solid black, solid white, or a team alternate color in addition to the game’s dominant team color, the regulations for in-game footwear are still quite severe.

Odell Beckham Jr. of the NY Giants, who received a $18,000 punishment for donning personalized cleats in memory of the late Craig Sager, and DeAndre Hopkins, who received a smaller $6,000 fine for donning Kanye West’s Yeezy kicks, received the most well-known fines from the NFL 2016 season. The adidas Yeezy 750 cleats worn by Von Miller definitely meet the requirement for solid-colored footwear, although the Yeezy 350 cleats don’t quite.

Several players in the league started wearing distinctive cleats to express their feelings about everything from family members to social injustice.

One of them that stood out was DeSean Jackson, who was playing for Washington in 2016. He chose to warm up for the game in Week 4 while sporting a pair of BrandBlack protest cleats, raising awareness of police brutality.

According to Jackson, “I felt like I was silent long enough.”

“I’m in my ninth NFL season this year. I have the visibility and a platform to speak up, and I can do it the correct way.”
