Dick Vitale Calls Out Jay Williams Over Caitlin Clark’s Critique

Despite being one of the greatest players in women’s college basketball history statistically, Caitlin Clark’s status as the finest player in the sport seems to be in question.

Dick Vitale Calls Out Jay Williams Over Caitlin Clark’s Critique

Jay Williams of ESPN has said that unless Clark wins a national title, she cannot be regarded as “great.”

But not everyone in the basketball community shares Williams’ opinion. Dick Vitale, a longtime ESPN commentator, upheld Clark’s achievements and said she is already a “great.”

In an X post on Monday night, the renowned college basketball commentator offered his perspective on the topic.

After dominating women’s college basketball and shattering records, the Iowa basketball star has become well-known in the sports world. However, Vitale believes that her lack of a title has been unfairly held against her.

“Recently there has been debate about being the GOAT as it related to @CaitlinClark22,” he wrote. “Look I RESPECT the views of others but I do not think it is FAIR to eliminate someone that doesn’t win a championship. Championships r won by strong talented TEAMS . I always felt that WILT C (Chamberlain) & many others don’t get a fair shake . He didn’t play with a HOF roster ala the Celtics.”

In addition to ranking in the top five all-time in assists, field goals made, and three-pointers made, Clark is the NCAA women’s basketball career scoring leader. However, the Hawkeyes were defeated by LSU in the national championship game the previous season, with Clark missing out on a first-ever victory by one game.

On February 15, Clark broke the record for the most career points scored by an NCAA women’s basketball team. She is now closing in on Pete Maravich, who holds the record for the most points scored by both men and women in Division I history.

It hasn’t, however, stopped some of the criticism over her lack of a title.

Last year, Iowa made it to the title game but lost to LSU and Angel Reese, which has caused some people, including ESPN analyst Jay Williams, that Clark isn’t the GOAT.

Vitale continued by drawing comparisons between Clark and Wilt Chamberlain, who was up against strong Boston Celtics squads during his NBA career and only managed two titles.

Before the point guard most certainly joins the 2024 WNBA draft, Iowa has one more chance to win the coveted championship from Clark this year. But Vitale says Clark is already an all-time great; he doesn’t need the distinction.

Wiliams expressed his appreciation for Caitlin after she surpassed Kelsey Plum’s all-time scoring record of 3527, but he also gave an explanation for his position about Caitlin’s GOAT title.

“OK, you wanna be a GOAT. Fine. There’s levels of greatness. You gotta win championships to be a GOAT. … Let’s slow down,” Williams said.
