Devin McCourty Reveals The Reason Behind His Retirement from Patriots

Devin McCourty, a former defensive back for the New England Patriots, declared his intention to stop playing football back in March. McCourty made the announcement that he will be joining NBC Sports as a sports analyst only a few months after his retirement. In the middle of this, McCourty has disclosed the rationale for his retirement.

Devin McCourty Reveals The Reason Behind His Retirement from Patriots

Recent statements by McCourty about the main reason he is no longer playing serve as a sobering reality check for the Patriots.

McCourty stated in an interview with Ari Hasan of the Pro Football Network that he decided not to play another season because he doesn’t think the Patriots can win a Super Bowl.

“I think for me [the] back-and-forth was just a little bit of that fear of not doing it. I started to just think about the things that were enticing [reasons] to play were no longer the things that I used to care about. Contract career earnings, interceptions, those things were things I never cared about. I didn’t start for the Patriots to do those things,” McCourty told Hasan. “But I think especially as you get older, you start to only play to win a Super Bowl. And I was like, if I go back, I don’t think we’ll go win a Super Bowl. So as I started to sit there and be like, ‘Alright, what did we really set myself up for? We were eight and nine last year. Am I gonna go to another team? Is it worth it for six months?'”

Devin was questioned on a variety of topics, including the factors that ultimately led him to decide to retire from football, as it had been rumored for some time. The former cornerback explained it simply by saying that he no longer had the same enthusiasm for the sport.

He talked about how a recent shoulder injury let him see things more clearly and gave him the opportunity to reflect on his professional goals and post-football aspirations.

The New England football franchise selected McCourty in the first round (27th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft. He distinguished himself right away as one of the league’s best defenders.

His NFL career came to an end with two Pro Bowl selections and three second-team All-Pro honours. In 13 years, he also won the Super Bowl ring three times.

And at that point, he was more forthright than most players in his situation would be, outlining one of the most important—and even unfavourable—reasons for his decision to hang up his spikes for good.
