Devin Haney vs Vasiliy Lomachenko: About, Date & Venue

The fight between Devin Haney vs Vasiliy Lomachenko, which will be the main event of an ESPN pay-per-view on May 20, is apparently “finally” being planned, according to a report by Mike Coppinger of ESPN.com.

When Haney (29-0, 15 KO) defeated George Kambosos Jr. in Australia last year, he effectively unified the lightweight division. Four months later, in a legally required rematch, Kambosos was defeated by Haney once more.

For a while, he had to put up with taunts about being a “email champion,” which really go back to the time Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KO) decided not to take on mandatory challenger Haney.

The circumstance emerged in 2019 as a result of a convoluted and absurd arrangement in which Lomachenko, who had the WBA and WBO lightweight belts, was given the go-ahead to take on Luke Campbell with the vacant WBC belt also on the line. Although this went against standard WBC policies, the appropriate individuals wanted it to happen.

After winning, interim champion Haney became Lomachenko’s mandatory challenger, but Lomachenko instead opted to accept a phoney “franchise title” from the WBC. This title has never meant anything other than that a star fighter didn’t want to face a mandatory challenger, and the sanctioning body wasn’t in any hurry to make him, while also still, in some way, recognising him.

In 2020, when every other sanctioning body was going to get a piece of the Lomachenko vs. Teofimo Lopez fight and the WBC were scheduled to be left out of the pot, the WBC altered their mind regarding the “franchise” belts, which were never ever planned to be defended. Due to this, Lopez and later Kambosos claimed to be the indisputable champion even though this was definitely in doubt.

The 24-year-old Haney and the 35-year-old Lomachenko are both signed to Top Rank, are in need of a fight, and everything is in place for them to face off next. Yet, all of that was resolved last year.
