Before leading the Belarus Fed Cup team to a runner-up result in 2017 alongside Aliaksandra Sasnovich, despite neither player being ranked in the top 75 at the time, Sabalenka was largely unknown. She was ranked No. 11 in the world in singles at the end of both 2018 and 2019.

Sabalenka reached the world No. 2 position after making two appearances in the major singles semifinals in 2021, but she found it difficult to sustain that performance in 2022. She finished runner-up at the US Open, made it to the semifinals of all four major tournaments, won her first major singles championship at the Australian Open, and rose to the top of the world rankings to win the title of ITF World Champion for the 2023 season.
