That means Stearns, an Upper East Side native, will be in charge of leading the team to the playoffs in 2024 and fulfilling owner Steve Cohen’s aim of competing for a World Series the following season and beyond.
“We are going to do our best to put together a team in 2024 that is competitive,” Stearns said Monday. “And we’re going to do it in a way that does not detract from our competitiveness in the future years. That is a needle to thread, but that’s our goal and that should be our goal.
"I've never seen such universal congratulations, saying, 'you've got to hire this guy.' That's pretty extraordinary."

When he first entered the baseball profession, David Stearns worked as a scout for the Texas Rangers. Moving forward, he joined the Cleveland Indians and assumed the post of director of baseball operations. Stearns showed his talent for contract negotiations, accurate compensation appraisals, and competent management of other critical baseball operations here.
Then, in 2015, a new chapter began when Stearns was named general manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. With his guidance, the Brewers not only revitalized their competitive spirit but also established their presence in the playoffs, most notably in 2018 and 2021.

When we look at the Mets’ wage arrangements for players, Stearns’ income outshines others. He’s expected to make more than the Mets’ starting pitcher, Max Scherzer, by 2024, despite the latter earning $43.3 million in 2023.
