Dalvin Cook’s Willingness To Sign With Cowboys Might Act As A Hinderance To Ezekiel Elliott

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, free-agent running backs Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Elliott “have interest in potentially signing” with the Dallas Cowboys.

Dalvin Cook’s Willingness To Sign With Cowboys Might Act As A Hinderance To Ezekiel Elliott

The Dallas Cowboys showed no interest in hooking up with Dalvin Cook throughout the course of the previous year, despite having many opportunities to do so. Not after the Vikings left him behind. Not with the Jets chasing him around. Not during the trade deadline when the Jets teased him. Not after the Jets cut him loose.

Around the same time as another fading star, old friend Ezekiel Elliott, discovers his hat has been tossed into the ring, Cook, the faded Pro Bowl back, is now apparently interested in signing with the Cowboys.

“Team owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones told the Dallas Morning News this week at the NFL’s annual meeting they could neither confirm nor deny interest in the running backs,” Gehlken wrote.

“While they declined to comment, anyone contemplating the Cowboys’ direction at the position would be wise to monitor the veteran running backs in conjunction with a rookie pick. Multiple people familiar with the players’ thinking told The News the veterans have interest in potentially signing with Dallas.”

Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook are two well-known names that are making the rounds in conversations. The franchise has shown a lot of interest in both of these players.

Elliott, a well-known player for the Cowboys, was selected by the team with the fourth overall choice in the 2016 draft. He performed admirably for seven seasons, but his contract was too big for him, and he was released in the 2023 offseason. Elliott played for the New England Patriots the previous season, seeing action in 17 games and racking up 642 running yards and three touchdowns.

Former Minnesota Vikings star Dalvin Cook, who divided time in 2023 between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens, had a mixed season. Cook had four seasons in a row with 1,000 yards running with the Vikings prior to that after being chosen in the second round of the 2017 draft.

Following Rhamondre Stevenson’s season-ending injured ankle, Elliott emerged as New England’s top running back, accumulating 955 yards and five touchdowns.

In New York, Cook descended the depth chart and was reduced to a third-string role with little playing time. Throughout the season, he only got 82 touches for 292 yards and no touchdowns.

The Cowboys will eventually add running backs to their roster before to their training camp break. The only questions are who and when. It seems like they are at least somewhat interested in Elliott and Cook.

Why did Ezekiel Elliott get kicked off the Cowboys?

He has won two NFL running titles, four 1,000-yard seasons, and is now the third-most prolific rusher in Cowboys history, behind Hall of Famers Tony Dorsett and Emmitt Smith. The Cowboys released Elliott on March 15 due to a drop in output, a high salary cap amount, and the development of Tony Pollard.

Is Ezekiel Elliott good?

Zeke is the third-best running back in team history by any statistical measure. He has more rushing titles than Dorsett (2-0), a better yards-per-carry average than Emmitt (4.4-4.2) and the third-most yards and touchdowns.
