Dallas Mavs Coach Jason Kidd Wants To Re-Sign Kyrie Irving At All Costs

Jason Kidd wishes for Kyrie Irving to be a “Mav for life.”

In a recent interview with Rachel Nichols for “Headliners,” Mavs head coach Jason Kidd was questioned about the team’s prospects for re-signing Irving in free agency.

Dallas Mavs Coach Jason Kidd Wants To Re-Sign Kyrie Irving At All Costs

The Dallas Mavericks are in need of keeping Kyrie Irving after losing Jalen Brunson to free agency last summer. Will Irving and Luka Doncic be the Mavericks’ starting lineups again next year?

Irving saw a Lakers playoff game last week from courtside, but he declined to give any exit interviews to DFW media. Irving, a native of West Orange and a former standout at St. Patrick High School, has been spending some time watching postseason games for other teams. Irving, a former Cleveland Cavaliers teammate of LeBon James, was in Los Angeles for Game 6 of the Lakers-Grizzlies series. Even when he was in Brooklyn, he was frequently mentioned in connection with a James-Lakers reunion.

On a Thursday NBA podcast, Mavs coach Jason Kidd stated the following:

“I think he truly is happy here,” Kidd said. I think he wants to be here, but that doesn’t guarantee us that he’s gonna stay.”

“He has the option and the opportunity as a professional to look elsewhere since he is a free agent,” Kidd explained. “And I don’t want to take that away from him, being a player who was in that situation.

“We’re going to do everything to keep Kyrie, and we hope that we’ve done everything to make him comfortable and want to be a Mav for life.”

After the organization effectively decided to tank at the conclusion of the season by not playing its star players, Irving and the Mavericks missed the NBA playoffs. As a consequence, NBA fined owner Mark Cuban $750,000.

According to ESPN, Irving, who was traded by the Nets to Dallas at the trade deadline, has the option to re-sign with Dallas on a 5-year, $272 million deal or to leave Dallas and sign a 4-year, $220.6 million agreement.

He urged the media to hold off on contacting him until after the season in February.

“I would love to just have the respect of you guys and everybody the rest of the season of just — continuously asking me that just puts unwarranted distractions on us and our team. I’ve dealt with it before and it’s very emotionally draining to ask questions like ‘what’s the long term? What’s the long term? What is it?’

This season, Irving played for the Nets and Mavericks and averaged 27.1 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.1 rebounds. Dallas had a record of 8–12 and 30-32 sans Irving.
