Dallas Cowboys Break a 31-Year Record on Thanksgiving Against the New York Giants

The tradition of having games on Thanksgiving is something that was started in 1934 by George Richards, who was the owner of the Detroit Lions at that time. Richards used it as a tactic to get more people to the stadium and eventually, over time, it became an irreplaceable tradition in the NFL to have games on Thanksgiving, with the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions being regular fixtures.

Thanksgiving festivities were kicked off by the Buffalo Bills, who took on the Detroit Lions. This was followed by a game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants, and finally, the New England Patriots took on the Minnesota Vikings to round off an action-packed day. 

Pundits expected the game between the Cowboys and the Giants to break viewership records and that is exactly what happened. Earlier this season, the Cowboys set the record for the most viewed game when they took on the Bengals attracting a whopping 27.2 million viewers. This record was broken a few weeks later when they took on Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers drawing in almost 30 million viewers. 

Dallas Cowboys smash viewership records once again

And as has been the case on Thanksgiving the past few years, the Dallas Cowboys prime-time game has once again smashed viewership records. The game between the Cowboys and the Giants drew in a record-breaking 42 million viewers which makes it the most-watched regular-season game on any network in history. 

It broke the previous regular-season mark of 41.474 million viewers for the 1990 49ers-Giants game. ‘America’s Team’ came close to breaking this record in 2021 when it drew in 40.802 million viewers for its Thanksgiving game. 

The Cowboys have gone from strength to strength after a sub-par start to the season. The likes of Dak Prescott, Micah Parsons, and CeeDee Lamb among others, are performing at a very high level and the Cowboys certainly look like a team that can go all the way this season.
