Witnesses watched in horror as a terrifying sight played out; video showed a big beast swimming down the river carrying Ortiz’s body. The tragedy happened in the town of Santa Cruz, which is around 140 miles from San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.

Mr. Ortiz played for the amateur club team Deportivo Rio Canas. Even in the Ascenso League of Costa Rica, he had played for the group.

He may have drowned or given in to the pressure of the animal during the attack, the source added.

“With deep sorrow we make public the death of our player Jesus Lopez Ortiz (Chucho) may God rest his soul,” read the statement as published by Marca.

“Today is a very difficult day for all of us and we will remember you in the many facets of your sporting life as a coach, player and also as a family man. You will always live in our hearts Chucho. Fly high,” it further said.

The crocodile had to be killed by gunfire in order for the authorities to be able to remove the soccer player’s remains, according to the local Red Cross.
