Cowboys QB Controversy: Excellent Cooper Rush OR Healthy Prescott?

In Week 5’s victory over the Rams, Cooper Rush’s miraculous run as the Cowboys‘ starting quarterback continued. Rush wasn’t at all dynamic in the win. He completed 10 of his 16 throws successfully for 102 yards without scoring a touchdown. Nevertheless, he avoided making a mistake and assisted Dallas in improving to 4-1 on the year and 4-0 since Dak Prescott’s thumb injury, a stage at which many believed the Cowboys were doomed.

Cooper Rush Made History

Rush undoubtedly owes a large portion of his success to Dallas’ defence’s performance. He also deserves a lot of credit for being uplifted by the offensive weapons surrounding him, like Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard, CeeDee Lamb, and Michael Gallup.

Having said that, Rush made history on Sunday by going 5-0 in his career as a starter. Few quarterbacks in NFL history have accomplished that feat, making it the best career start in Cowboys franchise history. Many believed the Cowboys’ season was over after the disastrous Week 1 performance since Dak Prescott was out for an extended period of time.

Four weeks later, Dallas is 4-0 under “Super” Rush and has looked quite good. Rush hasn’t had much to do because the Cowboys’ defence is performing like the top defence in football, and based on his 102 passing yards against the Rams, it’s clear that the defence is in charge of this team.

Cooper Rush maintained his poise in the face of a formidable Rams defence, throwing for just 102 yards (10/16) while committing no errors. The quarterback is currently 5-0 overall as a starter in the NFL (4-0 this season).

Making the following speculative query totally logical: why reinstate Dak Prescott as the team’s starter?

One supporter claimed after the game that Prescott’s excessive salary was why the club wasn’t winning.

“Anyone else beginning to believe Dak was the problem and significantly overpaid? I’m curious to know what Cowboys supporters are currently thinking about this unexpected success with a Dak-less squad.

NFL QBs Have Started Their Career 5-0

In total, 14 NFL quarterbacks had begun their careers by winning five consecutive starts dating back to when the stat was first counted in 1950. They are as follows.

  • Daryle Lamonica, 1963-67
  • Mike Livingston, 1969-72
  • Mike Kruczek, 1976
  • Dieter Brock, 1985
  • Mike Tomczak, 1986-87
  • Jeff Hostetler, 1988-91
  • Daunte Culpepper, 1999
  • Kurt Warner, 1999
  • Marc Bulger, 2002
  • Ben Roethlisberger, 2004-05
  • Jimmy Garoppolo 2016-17
  • Patrick Mahomes, 2017-18
  • Kyle Allen, 2018-19
  • Cooper Rush, 2021-22

That’s one big achievement!

Rush has definitely been good. He has complied with all requests made of him. But eventually, the Cowboys will play a tough opponent who will make them need at least 31 points to win. That person is not Rush. Nothing in his past suggests that he is that person.

The only people who think this is a topic worth discussing are those who only see trees and not forests. Jones appreciates a fun circus. He enjoys the spotlight. He enjoys hearing about himself and the Cowboys from others. He was, therefore, aware of what he was doing. His players and head coach did as well.
There is one thing for sure: Prescott, not Rush, will be the one leading them there, as it should be.
