Cowboys Announce Mike McCarthy’s Return But With A Contract Stipulation

Mike McCarthy, the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, will rejoin the team in 2024, general manager and owner Jerry Jones said on Wednesday night.

Cowboys Announce Mike McCarthy’s Return But With A Contract Stipulation

After the Cowboys’ shocking playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday afternoon, McCarthy’s future was called into doubt, but he will return to Dallas for a fifth and final season under his present deal.

It’s official. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy will be back for a fifth year on the job.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Cowboys owner and G.M. Jerry Jones said in a statement issued on Wednesday night. “There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach.

“Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively. Mike has the highest regular-season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our postseason goals.

“Certainly, Mike’s career has demonstrated postseason success at a high level, and we have great confidence that can continue.”

Even though Jones praised McCarthy after the decision was made, it doesn’t seem like the good vibes were enough to land him a larger deal.

McCarthy will coach the 2024 season on an expiring contract rather of receiving an extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The NFL Insider was informed by sources that McCarthy may have difficulties if the organization has to replace any positions due to his lack of long-term job security.

Since the 14-team system was implemented in 2020, the Cowboys became the first club ranked second to lose to the final team to qualify. In the last two weeks, Dallas dominated the NFC East and earned the opportunity to host at least two postseason games.

McCarthy’s club, on the other hand, is the first after three straight 12-win postseason seasons to miss out on a conference title game.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that while McCarthy may not receive a contract extension, star quarterback Dak Prescott is “on track” for a large one.

According to NFL.com, Prescott’s salary-cap charge for 2024—the last year of his current four-year contract—will be $59.455 million.

It would also be intriguing to learn what has been going on behind closed doors over the last three days. How close were the Cowboys to turning things around? Did quarterback Dak Prescott make a bold move by demanding that McCarthy stay or face the possibility of not signing a new contract this summer, knowing full well that they would have to do so in order to avoid paying a $59.4 million cap penalty for 2024?

Did Mike McCarthy win a Super Bowl?

McCarthy coached the Packers for more than twelve seasons, winning a Super Bowl and attending three more NFC title games.

How many career wins does Mike McCarthy have?

As one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, McCarthy is ranked 10th in all-time playoff victories (11), having led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV at AT&T Stadium in 2010, and he is ranked just outside the top 30 in all-time regular-season wins (167).
