Controversy Surrounded By NBA ‘Clutch Player Of The Year’ Award: Explained
The NBA this week unveiled six new trophies with iconic names, including the Jerry West Trophy for a new “Clutch Player of the Year” honour and the Michael Jordan Trophy for league MVP. More ornaments are always better. But shouldn’t the MVP also be the most clutch?
Controversy Surrounded By NBA ‘Clutch Player Of The Year’ Award: Explained
The Clutch Player of the Year honours iconic Lakers player Jerry West, the “Logo,” and has been added to the already well-known accolades for Most Valuable Player (now known as the Michael Jordan Award), Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, or Sixth Man of the Year.
One of them is named for West Virginia University and possibly the most accomplished athlete to ever represent the state of West Virginia. Jerry West is the name of that athlete.
New names and trophies for NBA’s major individual awards:
– MVP: The Michael Jordan Trophy
– DPOY: Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy
– ROY: Wilt Chamberlain Trophy
– Sixth Man of Year: John Havlicek Trophy
– Most Improved: George Mikan Trophy
– New Clutch Player of Year: Jerry West Trophy— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) December 13, 2022
From 1960 until 1974, West was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and quickly rose to the top of the sport’s professional divisions. Through 14 seasons in the Association, he averaged 27.0 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.8 rebounds per game.
In addition to other monikers like The Logo, West is also known as “Mr. Clutch” because of his propensity for pulling through for Los Angeles in testy circumstances.
That’s why for the first time this season, the NBA will name one player the Clutch Player of the Year, and he will receive the Jerry West Trophy.
The NBA is redesigning and renaming many of its individual awards.
The MVP is named after Jordan
The DPOY is named after Olajuwon
The ROY is named after Wilt
The MIP is named after Mikan
The 6th Man is named after Havlicek

It surprised a lot of people. The NBA has hardly mentioned what the criteria will be for earning the award, which has led to rumours. “Clutch time” is the term used to describe the final five minutes of deadlocked games, but who exactly falls under this category? It is not surprise that there will be some discussion over this new prize because there isn’t a definite description, but rather more of a notion.
The NBA has left the door open to these and other interpretations.
I went back and picked winners for the NBA's new Clutch Player of the Year award for the past 10 seasons:
– There's only one two-time winner, and it's not LeBron or Kobe.
– The Point God is the Clutch God.
– The wild 2016 race between Stephen Curry and…https://t.co/aTT3FsX9bG— Sam Quinn (@SamQuinnCBS) December 16, 2022
Reactions abound soon after the discovery, as with any significant NBA news. Perhaps there is someone who hates the changes being made for every person who appreciates them.
The NBA Clutch Player of the Year award, according to a completely different school of thinking, is unnecessary and will only serve to exacerbate existing tensions.
