College Football Rankings 2023: Know The Top Programmes Of The Country

Four of the Power Five conferences will undergo conference realignment, with the ACC being the only one yet to have made any changes official. But given that some ACC institutions are considering leaving, that may alter. Alabama currently tops the college football programmes but will it keep its position this season?

In addition, the field for the College Football Playoff will increase from four to twelve teams the following season. The change will provide more clubs with the chance to win a national title while simultaneously making it harder to do so.

Here are the metrics we used to determine those programs:

  • National championship: 10 points
  • CFP championship appearance: 5 points
  • CFP appearance: 5 points
  • New Year’s Day Six appearance: 2 points
  • Winning percentage: (16-1 poll style
  • Consensus All-Americans: 16-1 poll style
  • NFL Draft picks: 16-1 poll style
  • Heisman Trophy winners: 1 point

The best college football programs in the nation-

1. Alabama

Total score: 162

The CFP era’s top team has been the Alabama Crimson Tide. They have the most in the NCAA with three national championships, six trips to the championship game, and seven postseason outings.

Although the Buckeyes frequently send players to the NFL, they may be unrivaled in terms of recruiting and replacing that talent.

Additionally, the Crimson Tide has a winning percentage of.906. They are 115-12 overall. No other team in that time period had a winning percentage greater than 90%. Additionally, during this time, Alabama has generated the most NFL Draft choices and Consensus All-Americans.

The Crimson Tide might never miss a postseason game again as long as Nick Saban is the head coach, as the field will increase to 12 teams.

2. Clemson

Total score: 120.5

The College Football Playoff era has seen two national championships for the Clemson Tigers. They have participated in the CFP six times, making it to the title game four times.

Each of the previous two seasons, the Tigers failed to make the postseason. But under coach Dabo Swinney, they have routinely ranked among the best teams in the country.

Swinney has also established himself as one of the sport’s top recruiters. Because the Tigers didn’t make it to the College Football Playoff the last two seasons, which generated a 21-6 record and an ACC championship, have been mocked because Dabo Swinney’s team has amassed so much success.

3. Ohio State

Total score: 108

In the CFP era, the Ohio State Buckeyes have only won one title. They have participated in the CFP five times, twice making it to the title game.

The Buckeyes earned points in every category except Heisman Trophy winner, and since 2014, they have trailed only Alabama in terms of winning percentage, All-Americans, and NFL Draft selections. In CFP contests, Ohio State is 3-4.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are consistently one of the best teams in the country. They should continue to be in title contention next ahead thanks to the bigger playoff field and their excellent recruiting.

4. Georgia

Total score: 98.5

The Georgia Bulldogs have been in the postseason three times, each time making it to the CFP National Championship. Under coach Kirby Smart, Georgia has won both of the most recent championships and has excelled in the recruiting process.

In the previous two seasons, the Bulldogs have defeated Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State 3-1.

The Bulldogs are presently regarded as the team to beat in college football, but they will need to demonstrate that they can maintain their dominance regardless of who is on the roster.

5. Oklahoma

Total score: 59.5

Up until the Sooners, who have made the CFP four times under Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley while dominating the Big 12, there is a sharp drop-off in point totals after Georgia. Oklahoma lost by an average of 18 points per game and was 0-4 in those CFP semifinals.

After a 5-7 year under first-year coach Brent Venables, the Sooners slipped to eighth in overall winning percentage since 2014. This is Oklahoma’s final season in the Big 12 before moving to the SEC, and the team is attempting to end a title drought that began in 2000.

6. LSU

Total score: 56.5

The only two teams on this list to receive at least one point in each area were LSU and Alabama. The Tigers’ record is unchanged from the previous year, as Brian Kelly guided LSU back to the 10-win plateau in 2022.

LSU would be in the top five on this list if it weren’t for a two-year hiccup under Ed Orgeron from 2020–21, which resulted in an 11–12 record following the 2019 national title run.

7. Michigan

Total score: 48.5

The next obstacle for the program is the CFP or New Year’s Day Six, where Michigan is 0-4. Keep in mind that Harbaugh took over a club that finished 5-7 in 2014 under Brady Hoke when Michigan was far from being a top-10 program.

NFL Draft choices (sixth with 56) and All-Americans (tied for third with nine) have grown under Harbaugh. The Wolverines’ two victories against Ohio State have given them a psychological lift as well, but they must now take further action to overcome their national title drought that dates back to 1997.

8. Notre Dame

Total score: 45.5

Due to their previous CFP participation and six seasons with double-digit victories, Notre Dame deserves a spot in the top 10. Despite having a 4-8 record in 2016, the Irish had a 63-13 record over the previous six years. Only Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and Clemson have better records than the other schools.
