Terrence Shannon Jr., a basketball player for Illinois, was banned on Thursday following allegations of rape related to an alleged incident that occurred during a September football game against Kansas.

Shannon was suspended by the school from “all team activities, effective immediately,” one day after the district attorney of Douglas County, Kansas, filed an arrest warrant for him. On September 8, he was there at the Illini football game against Kansas, where the claimed incident had place. He was not on the field trip with the school.

According to Illinois, Shannon went to Lawrence, Kansas, on Thursday and gave himself over to the police. After posting bail, he was leaving for Champaign.

IAccording to the press statement, Shannon was in Lawrence on September 8 for an Illinois football game versus Kansas when the event happened. “Shannon is charged with rape, as defined under applicable Kansas law,” the report continues. Shannon’s journey to Lawrence, according to Illinois, was not part of any travel for school.

Illinois stated that although the school “had yet to receive actionable information” prior to Wednesday’s accusation, it had been aware of the inquiry since late September.

“Shannon has been immediately suspended from all team activities. Shannon’s status will be updated as soon as possible, according to the statement.

Although the Lawrence police department has been looking into Shannon since late September, the school noted that it had “yet to receive actionable information” until this past Wednesday.

Shannon, who spent three years at Texas Tech before moving to Illinois for his second season, is second in the Big Ten in scoring (21.7 points per game). Zach Edey of Purdue is the only one averaging higher.

In his five seasons between Texas Tech and Illinois, Shannon has made 125 appearances, starting 95 of them. After averaging 17.2 points per game in his debut season at Illinois, he was selected for the Big Ten and won All-Big 12 accolades in 2020–21. The only player for Illinois scoring more than 12 points a night this season is Shannon.

In a statement released on Thursday night, Mark P. Sutter, Shannon’s lawyer, maintained the Illinois celebrity’s innocence of any rape claims.

“Since September, when these allegations surfaced, Terrence has cooperated with law enforcement throughout the investigation, declaring his innocence from the beginning. Several months later, my office learned that formal charges were filed against him yesterday in Lawrence, KS. In less than 24 hours, my client responded, and he voluntarily surrendered to local authorities for processing and release. Terrence is innocent of these charges, and he intends to take his case to trial,” Shannon’s attorney wrote, according to college basketball insider Jeff Goodman.
