Cody Bellinger Gets A Pitch Clock Violation From The Umpire: Drove Fans Super Mad

Cody Bellinger, a centre fielder for the Cubs, had a fairly successful time playing with the Dodgers despite a rough last few seasons. Two years after having one of the finest rookie campaigns of the century in 2017, Bellinger was voted the National League’s MVP after batting.305 with 47 home runs and 115 RBIs.

Bellinger’s unfortunate misfortune was to leave Los Angeles prior to the 2023 season, jeopardising his triumphant return.

Los Angeles fans stood to applaud Bellinger as he entered the box to start the top of the second inning of Friday night’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. Home plate umpire Jim Wolf responded by assessing Bellinger with a pitch-clock violation, putting him down in the count 0–1 against Dodgers pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

The pitch clock functions as intended in 99% of at-bats, and spectators are often appreciative that games now run more frequently around two hours than they did before the restriction. The majority of baseball fans and media people feel that Bellinger’s at-bat was one of those moments that deserves a little more time.

The call “wasn’t [his] favourite thing of the night,” according to Chicago manager David Ross after the game, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. Following the Cubs’ 8-2 victory, Bellinger addressed the situation himself:

“Really cool. I got super emotional during it. It brought back a lot of memories that I remembered, so it was a good ovation,” he said. “I was surprised [by the violation] but rules are rules, I guess, at the end of the day. So once I got dinged, I just locked it in and was competing from there.”
