Clarke Schmidt’s Poor Performance Makes Him Less Reliable For The Yankees

Schmidt, unfortunately, turned up another lacklustre outing, allowing seven earned runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. The bases were loaded when Schmidt was removed in the fifth inning, setting up Albert Abreu to pitch out of the bullpen.

Clarke Schmidt’s Poor Performance Makes Him Less Reliable For The Yankees

On Sunday afternoon, the New York Yankees had a strong offensive performance against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, the Bombers needed to defeat Tampa in a series to further close the gap in the AL East. Currently, the Yankees are eight games behind and are only half a game away from finishing last in their division.

The Yankees were unable to do the same against the Rays in a Mother’s Day afternoon game they ultimately lost 8-7 after Schmidt was charged with seven runs on six hits over four and a third innings. A day earlier, they had survived a six-run effort by Cortes.

Although Luis Severino’s possible Sunday return from a lat strain should benefit the rotation, the fact that Cortes and Schmidt both have ERAs above 5.00—with Schmidt’s rising to 6.30 following Sunday’s defeat—is less than ideal.

Starting pitcher Schmidt appears to be nearing the end of his career. It is unknown if Jhony Brito or Schmidt will be given new responsibilities, but the 27-year-old has undoubtedly had a difficult start to the 2023 season. Schmidt has a 61.6% left-on-base rate, a 45.1% ground-ball rate, and a 17.4% HR/FB ratio despite having an exceptional pitch composition.

“I felt like I was making good pitches and obviously something could’ve kicked my way a little bit at the end right there,” Schmidt said. “Just continuing to make pitches throughout and continuing to compete. We thought we were close to getting out of that one. Obviously it’s a tough one to end on that note.

We gotta get a little more out of the rotation as a whole, no question about it,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone admitted, though he ultimately downplayed any bigger-picture issues. “Nestor I do believe will be fine, I think this is a little bump in the road. I think he’ll make his adjustments and get back on track.

“Clarke, obviously the line was rough today and this is a tough lineup I think for him to go through. He gave up a couple runs there in his first few innings and I actually felt like he was throwing the ball really well today and not making a lot of mistakes.”
