Chris Paul Claims To Have A “Personal” Issue With Official Scott Foster

Chris Paul and Scott Foster are two of the most entwined athletes and referees in sports history, and on Wednesday night, the Phoenix Suns defeated the Golden State Warriors 123-115 to add another chapter to their long saga. Foster sent Paul to the showers with two rapid technical fouls with only a few seconds left in the first half, right before halftime.

Paul was called for a foul on his former teammate Kevin Durant at the top of the key, which sparked the altercation. Paul walked straight to Foster and began talking while Durant moved to the line. After that, the two got into a long, apparently amicable conversation that soon grew heated.

Foster ultimately lost patience and called Paul for a technical foul just before Durant attempted his second free throw. Paul became even more furious by that and proceeded to bark at Foster. Consequently, he was promptly given a second technical and was automatically ejected. At that time, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr intervened and received a technical foul of his own.

Paul later claimed to reporters that Foster was taking personal revenge on him by abusing his position as referee.

“It’s personal. We had a situation some years ago and it’s personal. The league knows. Everybody knows. There was a meeting and all of that. I’m OK with a ref saying whatever they’re saying, but don’t use a tech to get your point across,” Paul said.

When Foster officiated Paul’s 11th consecutive playoff game while he was a player for the Suns in 2021, he became extremely irate.

The event on Wednesday is only the most recent chapter in their story. And that will undoubtedly occur once more as long as they are both in the league.

The Warriors’ surge came too late, even though they managed to trim the deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter. The Suns managed to secure the eight-point victory, their fifth in a row.

This beef is not going to be resolved anytime soon. Chris Paul acknowledged that this was personal, but it’s unclear when exactly his tense connection with Foster would be revealed.
